History
Built in 1910 in response to a disastrous 1905 storm that wrecked ships along Lake Superior's North Shore, Split Rock Lighthouse sits on a 130-foot cliff. Its striking yellow-brick tower with red-roofed keeper's quarters resembles a remote fortress. The light was deactivated in 1969 and is now a National Historic Landmark and museum; each November it is ceremonially relit to honor lost mariners.
