History
Lit on June 11, 1764, Sandy Hook Light is the oldest surviving lighthouse in the United States. Its octagonal masonry tower guided ships into New York Harbor for over two and a half centuries and survived both the Revolutionary War — when it was targeted by American artillery — and centuries of storms. It remains an active aid to navigation within Gateway National Recreation Area, with guided tours in season.
