History
Commissioned by George Washington in 1790 and first lit in 1791, Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Its rugged location atop the rocky cliffs of Cape Elizabeth made it one of the most important navigational aids along the stormy Maine coast. Today it remains an active aid to navigation, and the former keeper's quarters house a museum open to the public.
