History
Completed in 1870, Point Reyes Lighthouse is a 16-sided cast-iron tower built to mark the most windward point of the California coast. Because the point is so often foggy, the light was placed on a ledge below the headland cliff to stay beneath the fog layer. Visitors descend 308 steps to reach it; the lighthouse was deactivated in 1975 and now operates as a museum within Point Reyes National Seashore.
