History
Cape Hatteras Light was completed in 1870 to guard the treacherous Diamond Shoals, where the Labrador Current meets the Gulf Stream and has wrecked hundreds of vessels. At 198.5 feet, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and among the tallest in the world. In 1999-2000, the entire tower was moved 2,900 feet inland to escape shoreline erosion — an engineering feat that preserved the structure for future generations.
