History
The current Bodie Island tower, completed in 1872, is the third built on the site — the first two were undermined by poor foundations and the Confederate army. Its distinct horizontal black-and-white banding makes it a visual counterpart to Cape Hatteras's spiral. After a full restoration, the tower is open to climbers seasonally, offering views over the marsh and Pamlico Sound.
